Character Expressions
Grade 1 - 2 - March 30th - April 3rd
Description
Students will explore emotions by drawing a series of characters each conveying a different emotion. They will utilize various colored pencil techniques to enhance and finish their drawings.
Lesson Objectives
Students will draw a series of similar characters.
Students will depict different emotions through their characters' expressions.
Students will use various colored pencil techniques to enhance and complete their drawings.
Brainstorm and Sketch
Brainstorm several possible character designs. Sketch them in the sketchbook or on paper.
Create Series
Choose one character from the brainstorm ideas. Cut out the drawing. Trace the cardstock 4-6 times in the sketchbook or on paper. Trace the animal inside each of the traced cardstock shapes.
Draw Basic Facial Feature Lines
Draw the basic lines of the face to create unity and pattern throughout the series.
Add Expression
Decide which 4-6 emotions to depict. Label each picture with an emotion. Add expressions using the mouth, eyebrows, and eyes to convey the intended emotion.
Add Embellishments
Add additional embellishments such as hats, bows, glasses, etc.
Add Color and Outline
Fill in the characters using various colored pencil techniques. Outline the shapes and details if necessary.
